Koval served in the army in Hungary and Czechoslovakia during the “Prague Spring.” After demobilization, he taught foreign languages and music in his native village. In 1974, after participating in nationally conscious actions, he faced pressure from the KGB, which deeply influenced his worldview and turned him into a committed nationalist.
Later, Koval founded a children’s folk ensemble “Dudaryk” and actively performed at various festivals in Ukraine and abroad. In 1991, he received an old-style bandura, which marked a turning point in his creative journey.
Koval is an active promoter of Ukrainian folk music, a member of the National Union of Kobzars of Ukraine, and a member of the Kyiv Kobzar Guild. He has been honored as a Merited Worker of Culture and received the Order of Merit, 3rd class.
